Before you start
- An Android TV, Google TV or Android box with 2 GB of RAM or more
- A Google account already signed in on the device
- Your Smart4K server URL, username and password

Setting it up
Establish which Android you are actually running
This decides the next four steps, so settle it first. A proper Android TV or Google TV build shows a row-based home screen laid out for a remote, and its Play Store carries the television versions of apps. Some cheap boxes ship the phone build of Android with a launcher painted over it, and their Play Store hides every television-only listing, TiViMate included. Press the home button: if you are looking at a grid of phone icons rather than rows of content, you have the phone build and will be sideloading rather than installing. Check the back panel while you are there, because an Ethernet socket is worth more than any setting in this guide.
Open the Play Store with an account already signed in
It sits on the home row, or under Apps on Google TV. Confirm a Google account is signed in before you search, because the store lets you browse anonymously and then fails at the install with a message that does not mention accounts. On a box that came pre-owned or second-hand, sign out of whatever account is on it and sign in with your own; leftover accounts are a common cause of installs that stall at nought per cent.
Choose the player for this screen, not for the household
Two are worth installing. TiViMate is the reason most people move to Android in the first place: a proper guide grid by channel and time, with a stream still running in the corner. It is Android only and asks a small licence for recording and multi-view. IPTV Smarters is free, plainer, and runs on every other platform in the house as well. On a main television used nightly, take TiViMate. On a spare room set, or on a box with a gigabyte of RAM, Smarters will stay quicker.
Hand the player your line as an Xtream login
TiViMate asks you to Add playlist and then offers Xtream Codes login. Smarters phrases the same thing as Login with Xtream Codes API. Either way you supply the server address with its http:// and port, then the username and password from your activation message. Take the Xtream route rather than the M3U one wherever both appear, because the guide, the catch-up window and the on-demand library arrive with it instead of needing to be attached afterwards.
Let the first load run to the end
It now pulls the channel list and then the programme data, and the second of those lands well after the first. On a list this size the first run takes a minute or two and every run after it is quicker, because the app keeps what it already has. Name the playlist if prompted; that only matters if you later add a second one. Do not judge the guide until the download has actually stopped.
Cut the list down to something you will use
This is the step people skip and then complain about. Turn off the categories you will never open, pin the ones you will, and set the language so the guide reads in it. TiViMate keeps all of this under Settings, then Playlists. Ten minutes here is the difference between a television and a spreadsheet, and the choices are reversible, so there is nothing to get right first time.
Set hardware decoding, then test the chain end to end
In the player settings, set the decoder to hardware so the chip does the work rather than the main processor. Then play a 4K channel, then its HD twin from the same category, and watch motion rather than the logo. A real difference means the chain is intact. No difference at all means the limit is further along it: the panel, the line into the house, or the last three metres. On an Android box that last one is usually the easiest to fix, because unlike a stick most of them have an Ethernet port sitting unused.
When the picture is wrong
The Play Store has no TiViMate on this box
Almost always the phone build of Android with a television launcher over it, which hides every listing marked television-only. Nothing is wrong with the account. Install Downloader from the store instead and sideload the APK the same way the Firestick guide describes; the app itself behaves identically once it is on. If you are shopping rather than troubleshooting, a box that cannot show TV listings is telling you something about the rest of its software.
The picture is clean for twenty minutes and then softens
Heat. Cheap boxes put a fast chip in a sealed plastic case with no airflow, and when it warms up the clock drops and the decoder starts skipping work rather than dropping the stream. It looks like a connection problem and is not, which you can confirm by noticing it happens at the same point every evening regardless of channel. Stand the box on its edge, keep it out of a closed cabinet, and if the pattern survives that, the box is the weak link.
The box restarts whenever a 4K channel opens
A 4K stream loads the chip harder than anything else the box does, and an underpowered supply browns out exactly at that moment. Try the original power adapter rather than a phone charger, and use a powered hub if an external drive is plugged into it. If the reboot survives a known-good supply, the box does not have the memory headroom for the grid and the stream at once, and dropping back to a simpler player is the cheapest fix.
The player to run on this device
TiViMate
TiViMate runs on Android only. Add your Smart4K Xtream login, set the guide to refresh, pick the decoder and browse 25,000+ channels in the grid.
IPTV Smarters Pro
IPTV Smarters Pro on Firestick, Android, Samsung, LG, Apple and PC: install it, enter the Xtream login, set the decoder, open 25,000+ channels.

Questions people ask about the Android TV
Which Android box is worth buying for IPTV?
An Nvidia Shield is the quickest thing on the platform and handles 4K without hesitation, though it costs more than a year of the subscription. A Chromecast with Google TV 4K is the sensible middle. For a generic box, insist on at least 2 GB of RAM and a real Ethernet port, and read the specification sheet with suspicion, because that end of the market advertises numbers the hardware has never produced.
Does Smart4K work on Chromecast with Google TV?
Yes. It runs Android TV underneath, so TiViMate and IPTV Smarters both install from the Play Store and take your three credentials exactly as described above. It is one of the tidier setups available and one of the few cheap devices that does not need sideloading at any point.
Why is the programme guide still empty?
Let the first download finish before deciding anything, because on a large list the guide arrives several minutes after the channel names. If it is still bare afterwards, trigger Update EPG from the app settings. The guide source travels with the Xtream login on this service, so there is normally nothing separate to paste, though support can send a standalone URL for the handful of players that insist on one.
Should I buy a box advertised as 8K?
No, and the claim is worth understanding rather than just ignoring. Almost nothing is broadcast in 8K, so a box marketed on it is describing an output mode, not a picture you will ever receive. The same listing usually overstates the RAM as well. A 4K box with 2 GB and an Ethernet port will show you more than an 8K box with neither.
