How to Set Up an IPTV Player on an LG webOS Television

1. Check the webOS generation and decide where the player lives

   Open Settings, General, About This TV and read the version. Anything from webOS 3.0 upward, which means 2016 and later, will run the apps below. The practical divide is around 2019: sets from then on have enough processor to make the guide feel responsive, while earlier ones run the same software noticeably slower. If yours is older and you want speed rather than tidiness, a stick on a spare HDMI input is the better answer, and the LG panel still does all the displaying. Decide this now, because the rest of the guide changes depending on the answer.

   Get a login first

2. Open the LG Content Store

   Press Home, open the LG Content Store, move across to Apps and use the search field. There is no sideloading route on webOS and no developer mode worth attempting, so whatever the store shows you is the complete list of options for this television.

3. Install a player and avoid the imitations

   Search for IPTV Smarters Player, iPlayTV or GSE Smart IPTV. Smarters costs nothing; the other two carry a one-off price and better interfaces for it. What you should not buy is anything called TiviMato or Tivimax. Those are unrelated products from other developers trading on a name people half remember, and TiViMate itself has never existed on webOS because it is an Android application. If a listing is a letter or two away from a name you recognise, that is the tell.

4. Enter your Smart4K details the way the app expects

   IPTV Smarters wants Login with Xtream Codes API, followed by the server address with its http:// and port, then the username and password from your activation message. Smart IPTV works the other way round entirely: it shows a MAC address and has no login screen, and you send your M3U link to that MAC at siptv.app/mylist from a phone or laptop. Note the MAC down before you leave the room, because the next part happens on a different device.

5. Let it restart, then learn the coloured buttons

   Close the app fully and reopen it; the full line-up and the built-in guide load on that second run. The coloured buttons on the LG remote handle favourites and the guide directly, and on a list this size they are what make the television pleasant rather than exhausting to live with. If you have a Magic Remote, the pointer is quicker than the arrow keys for reaching a category, and clicking the scroll wheel jumps a page at a time.

6. Switch off TruMotion, then compare two versions of one channel

   LG ships motion smoothing on by default under Settings, Picture, Picture Mode Settings, TruMotion. On a live football feed it invents frames and turns a moving crowd to soup, so set it off or to User with both sliders low. Then do the honest test: play a 4K channel, play the HD copy of the same channel, and watch the same movement in each. A visible gap means the whole chain is intact. Identical pictures mean something upstream is the limit, and on a television that is almost always the connection.

When the picture is wrong

A decoder mismatch rather than a dead channel, and the audio proves it: the sound track is simple enough for anything to handle, so it carries on while the video quietly fails. Switch the player to native or hardware decoding in its settings. If that does not bring the picture back, take the lower-bitrate copy of the same channel, which exists for most sports feeds, because what you have found is a codec the set will not decode at that resolution.

The app restarts from the beginning after you switch inputs

webOS suspends background applications aggressively and will discard one entirely if the memory is wanted elsewhere, so coming back from an HDMI input or a long standby drops you at the app splash screen rather than where you were. This is the platform behaving as designed and no setting changes it. What helps is closing other apps before you start watching, and it is one more argument for a stick if you switch inputs constantly.

The channel list jumps ten entries at a time

That is the Magic Remote pointer being read as a scroll gesture, not a fault in the player. Put the remote down so the pointer times out and use the arrow keys, or click the wheel to page deliberately. Building a favourites list is the real fix here: once thirty channels sit in their own group, nobody is scrolling through thousands of entries with a motion remote in the first place.
