Setting it up
Choose the Xtream route over the playlist route
Most players offer both and the naming makes them look interchangeable, which they are not. Take the Xtream option wherever it appears. It pulls the guide, the catch-up window and the on-demand library along with the channels, all indexed, whereas the M3U route hands over one flat file and leaves you to attach a guide separately afterwards. The only reason to take the playlist instead is a player too old to know what Xtream is, and the M3U guide covers that case.
Find what your player calls it
The names differ enough to be confusing and mean exactly the same thing. IPTV Smarters calls it Login with Xtream Codes API. TiViMate calls it Xtream Codes login, sitting under Add playlist. Most others shorten it to Xtream, or simply to API. If the screen in front of you is asking for one long web address rather than three separate fields, you are in the playlist option and should go back.
Enter the server address, including the part people leave off
This single field causes most failed logins and it is worth being pedantic about. It needs http:// at the front and the port number on the end, shaped like http://example.com:8080. Nothing goes after the port: no slash, no get.php, no username. A missing port will often produce a login screen that appears to accept you and then shows an empty channel list, which sends people looking at their password for an hour.
Type the username and password rather than pasting them
Both are case sensitive, and the failure they cause is silent. Copying from a chat frequently carries an invisible space at the end that no screen displays, and a phone or television keyboard will helpfully capitalise the first letter of a lowercase username without telling you. Typing them by hand once, slowly, rules both out. The profile name the app asks for is cosmetic and affects nothing at all, so call it whatever you like.
Save, then watch what actually comes down
The channels arrive first, then the on-demand library, then the guide, and the gap between the first and the last is longer than people expect on a list this size. A login that produces channels but no guide after several minutes is worth a forced refresh from the app settings before it is worth a message to support. A login that produces nothing at all is a server address problem rather than a credentials problem, nine times out of ten.
Keep the three values where you can find them again
Every device you add from now on takes the same three, so a second television is a two-minute job if you have them and a support conversation if you do not. Store them the way you would a password, because anyone holding them holds your line. If you do lose them, they can be resent on WhatsApp, but the account has to be identified first and that is slower than writing them down once.
When the picture is wrong
The app only offers a field for an M3U URL
A few older players never implemented the Xtream API and will only accept a playlist. Use the M3U link from the same activation message, which carries the identical line in a different wrapper, and expect to attach the programme guide separately afterwards. Nothing about your account changes between the two routes; what changes is how much the player can work out for itself.
It logs in, the channels play, and the guide stays empty
The guide is fetched as a separate request after the channel list, so on a large line there is a real gap before it fills. Give it several minutes on the first run, then force an update from the app settings. If it is still empty after that, the player may be one of the handful that wants a guide address of its own, in which case support can send the xmltv URL that goes with your login.
The same details work on a phone and fail on the television
This is almost always input rather than credentials, and the phone proves it. Television keyboards capitalise the first character by default and some remotes insert a space when you move between fields. Retype the username in lowercase, retype the password, and check the server address has no trailing slash. If it then works, nothing was ever wrong with the line.

What is Xtream Codes, exactly?

The three values are simply the address to ask and the identity to ask with. It became a common format because it saved every player from inventing its own, which is why an app from one developer takes a login issued by an entirely different service.
Is an Xtream Codes login legal?
The format itself is just a way of passing a username, a password and a server address, and ordinary apps in every app store use it for entirely ordinary purposes. Nothing about the mechanism is restricted. What is the difference between this and my M3U link?
Same line, different amount of intelligence. The Xtream login lets the player ask for things separately and build a guide, a catch-up window and an on-demand section. The M3U link is one flat file of channel names and addresses with nothing else in it. Use the Xtream login in any player that offers it and keep the M3U for VLC, Kodi and Smart IPTV, which only understand playlists.
Do the three values ever stop working?
They stop when the line reaches its end date and start working again on renewal, with the same values and nothing to reinstall or reconfigure. An app reporting an expired account is telling you about the date rather than about a fault, which is worth checking before you start changing settings that were correct all along.
